University Mall Summer 2012 Update

Happy new year for everyone here is the first new article for 2013. 2013 will be the last year of regular updates for this blog as I feel that my objective for this blog has been accomplished. I founded this blog to cover many retail outlets in Louisiana and Texas that were never covered elsewhere (example Inglewood Mall in Morgan City LA). I also wanted to provide updates, photos, and more information on retail that has been covered elsewhere (example Belle Promenade Mall in Marrero LA). I will still accept reader submitted posts with photos for the blog, and I appreciate any submissions.

Welcome to the late summer update on the University Mall in Nacogdoches TX. As you can see the mall has been freshened up and looks much nicer than on my last visit. A few new stores including the anchor Cititrends have opened at the mall.

  1. The Burke's Outlet closed up around March of this year.

    1. That is not good news at all for the mall. Burke's was one of the stores they brought in several years ago to boost traffic. Are the rest of the stores pictured here still open?

  2. Gordon's has closed up and a flea market type place has taken the former Bealls location. It wouldn't surprise me if this mall gets torn down and replaced by apartments in a few years.

    1. This and many other small town malls limp along and then go through small growth periods. The mall is actually too big for the market and will continue to keep around half of the spaces filled, but will more than likely not fill up again without a major renovation. The anchors will continue to do well while the interior of the mall will probably struggle.

  3. JcPenney announced today that the store in the mall will be closing. It makes me curious to see if Belk will stay around for much longer.

    1. I dropped by the mall recently and they added some antique retailers to a few empty spots. Decades is moving into the mall corridor as well and there is a plan for their old space but I did not get any specifics.
