I am a little late with reporting this news, but the Hastings that was covered in the blog closed over two years ago. Here is a link to the article. Sadly many stores like this one have closed over the past decade with chains such as Border's, Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, Media Play, and FYE shrinking or closing altogether. Hastings is still located in many areas, but this closing leaves Huntsville without a good local option for the items they carried. The closest location is in Conroe about 30 minutes South.
No more books, movies, games, coffee, or the rest of the cool items that were sold here.
Here are a couple of pictures of when the store was still in business from 2011.
Thanks for chronicling this former media store. Hastings is still around in some areas as you say, but they're certainly not as numerous as they once were. I remember seeing the Conroe store the last time I drove on that part of I-45 a couple years ago, but I have no idea how the store is doing. I have not been to one of these multi-media type stores in quite a while (aside from Barnes & Noble and Half Price Books if you want to count them) since we don't have many left in Houston. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit short on time at the moment so I'll post responses to your latest replies on the Slidell Sears post in the next couple of days. I have a lot of updates based on recent visits to the Pasadena Town Square and the Main St. Sears. I also have some various other updates and some unexpected adventures in audio recording.
This store closing was a big loss for Huntsville. Small towns such as Nacogdoches and Alexandria need to do what they can to keep these stores afloat. The store in Alexandria has a drive-thru at their coffee shop as well as an indoor cafe.
DeleteHastings is closing down in College Station, TX on August 14, 2015. They are having a going out of business sale. The Bryan, TX location will still be open for now. They said they were not making enough money in-store.
ReplyDeleteThat sucks, I guess the market is not big enough to support both stores. At least Bryan is not too far away from the University. The Bryan store is the better location IMO, and had a better selection of products.
DeleteHastings stores are now permanently closed as of Oct 29, 2016.
