Here are some previously lost video clips from February 2004 of the former JCPenney and the small piece of the mall corridor that was left behind.
Ten years before these videos were taken these were the stores inside of the mall. 58 total spaces filled with stores, restaurants, doctors, salons, and a sheriffs department outlet. This list might be missing a few names, but it is the most complete list that I could find.

It is amazing how fast a building can become dilapidated. The mall does not look like it was used in twenty years. What exactly lead to its demise?
ReplyDeleteThe building in the video was closed for five years when I took the videos. The mall lasted from 1983-2000 and was built mostly on speclation of future growth. New Orleans had a major hit to their economy in the mid 1980's when oil prices fell and many upper to middle class jobs were lost. Houston and several other cities also were affected from the "oil bust". New Orleans lost a significant amount of population and the major growth of the trade area near this mall did not materialize. They had projected a population growth of over 150,000 near the mall that did happen.
