Kenilworth Mall 2012 updated March 28, 2015

Here is another exclusive mall to the blog. Kenilworth Mall was a shopping center/ mall that was located on Morrison Rd near the I-10 interchange. Kenilworth Mall opened in the then fast growing New Orleans East area just four years before the massive Lake Forest Plaza Mall opened two exits away on Read Blvd and I-10. Any additional photos of this mall will be greatly appreciated southernmalls@gmail.com.

The mall was very similar in size and design to the Inglewood Mall in Morgan City Louisiana.

Here is a link to a groceteria photo, scroll down to the fourth post for a picture of the mall.
Today this is all that remains of the former mall; the parking lot and foundation.

This building is not part of the mall but it is located just outside of the mall complex.
Kenilworth Mall had the grand opening on July 30, 1970 but some stores opened early (designated next to store list below). The mall had an area inside called the promenade with small shops.

A and P Supermarket
Avalon Bazaar
Bagert Drycleaners
Bresslers 33 Flavors
Burger King (outparcel)
The Chateau Fashions (Opened March 21, 1970)
Diners/ Fugazy Travel
Franks Beauty Parlor
Jennies Hallmark Cards
Katz and Besthoff Drug Store (K and B) (Opened February 16, 1970)
Kenilworth Barber Shop
Kenilworth Cinema (Opened Aug 13, 1969 with the movie Ice Station Zebra)
Kenilworth Fashion Fabrics
S H Kress Family Store (Opened at the end of 1969)
Lake Forest Inc.
Mel's Monograms (Opened June 1970)
Mr K's Boutique
Music Monitor
National Bank of Commerce
New Dimension Gift Shop
Shakey's Pizza
Style Line Ladies Wear
V and L Coins and Gifts
Vision Plaza East
Wig Castle

The mall suffered for years and did not have too many businesses left in 1999; my only visit to this center. K and B was still here after Rite Aid took over and a few small spaces were in business. The mall was flooded during Hurricane Katrina and sat for a few years until the site was demolished. The Burger King unit that was next to the mall has also been demolished. As you will see in my next New Orleans East articles, nearly all of the I-10 East retail has been wiped out because of Hurricane damage. Wal-Mart, Sams Club, Sears Appliances, The Grand Cinema, Dillard's, Sav A Center, Big Lots, Toys R Us, and several small shops are all gone.

K & B Lafayette Johnson St. (Now also a Rite Aid)

Part 2 of the two part Lafayette K and B series.

For more info please check out this book about the history of K and B drug stores available on Amazon and in several Louisiana bookstores. This book is a must read for any fan of K and B drugstores.
Here is another example of a former K and B that still contains many K and B fixtures in use. I am glad that Rite Aid has left some locations nearly unchanged after 15 years.
This store has a larger Pharmacy entrance than the previous store.

More purple carpeted walls in front of the pharmacy counter at this location.
If the Rite Aid sign was not in the far right corner of this picture you would believe this photo was taken when this store was K and B in the 1990's. Except K and B usually stacked their ice coolers with the K and B logo above the liquor and beverages.
In several sections of this store the K and B purple slats are still being used to help shoppers locate products.
In the background you can see the mirrored background in the cosmetics area with the K and B purple slats.
A K and B tote cart still being used, but I could not see a logo like the shopping carts used to have.

K & B Lafayette Ambassador Caffery (Now Rite Aid)

Here is an example of a Rite Aid that still has many K and B fixtures in place. This is part one of a two part series of Lafayette K and B stores that have not been fully renovated to the Rite Aid store design.
This is the updated pharmacy look from the 1990's K and B style.

Take a closer look at the purple under the pharmacy checkout counter.
The lining above the shelves is still K and B purple.
This is an original K and B book and magazine rack!

You can see some of the slats still being used that rank the best seller books. I am not sure if these were the actual best seller books at the time this photo was taken though.

K & B/ Rite-Aid Lake Charles LA

This former K and B location is located off of McNeese and Ryan St in Lake Charles Louisiana. The first five photos in show the detail of this former K and B location that has hardly changed since becoming a Rite-Aid. For some more K and B original photos click here for my article on the Inglewood Mall.
The inside of this location has not changed much after becoming Rite-Aid and still features many fixtures with the K and B purple The next two photos of the pharmacy show the detail of the K and B pharmacy.

This photo came out fuzzy but you can see the K and B purple lining above the shelves.
All of the next five photos were submitted by Joel Staves. The K and B logo is still intact on the back door of the above location. He also had this information about all of the former Lake Charles K and B locations.
"There was one on 5th Avenue that moved to Highway 14 by the Kroger that shut down last year. The 5th Avenue location also shut down and is now a Salvation army thrift store. There was also another one on Ryan St. which relocated across the street to a new building as a Rite-Aid. There was also one on W. McNeese St and in Prien Lake Mall." Thank you Joel for the photos and information on the Lake area stores.

Northgate Mall 2012

I made a second visit in less than a year to Northgate Mall to get more photos before Albertsons and Transcom closed at the mall. The owners of the mall should try and lure a big box retailer into the former Albertsons location and reopen the mall entrance that was sealed off after JCPenney closed. Also they could possibly lure a college campus to the former Transcom building. Some of the empty stores inside of the mall could also be combined to add another big box concept or two inside of the mall. This mall is in a great location close to downtown Lafayette. Enjoy the new photos.
Will they update the directory since Albertson's shut down?
RIP Albertsons; this store closed in February 2012.

Transcom just before closing Jan 2012.
This entrance is close to the Stage court of the mall.
