New photos from Aug 2011.
The third floor of the Macy's has the older 1980's style lights that you do not see in most stores these days.
The ceiling in the middle of the store has much more color and detail than the newer bland 2000's look.
Macy's from the street level. This is the only older designed Macy's still left in Houston. Back in the mid 1990's Macy's sold all of their Houston locations (Deerbrook, Baybrook, and Willowbrook) to Dillard's except the Galleria. Dillard's has completely remodeled and expanded all of those former locations except Deerbrook. Deerbrook was only updated inside and still looks like the Macy's on the outside.
Here is the Galleria Mall Map; we are at the section at the very top of the map in blue. This part of the mall is attached to the main Galleria through Saks Fifth Avenue, and this may be the reason that this part of the mall is struggling. The Foley's on the North side of the Galleria was rebranded Macy's and the new store has probably hurt traffic to this part of the mall. The Sharper Image, Fox Sports Grill, and several stores have closed in recent years further weakening this part of the mall.
This is the Macy's at Sage. This anchor has not been updated much since opening in the mid 1980's and the store has been rumored to be on the chopping block for a few years.
The entrance to Saks Fifth Avenue with the former Fox Sports Grill on the left.
Here is the rest of the wing; there is not much open on this side of the Galleria. A barber, two small restaurants, and a few clothing stores are open in this quiet wing of the Galleria. The former Fox Sports Grill is under renovation to become a sports club.
I was shocked at how run-down Macy's at the Galleria (on Sage) has become. It was dreadful, especially when we recall how busy and prosperous that location used to be twenty years ago. The exterior doors and elevators used to gleam, and now they are corroded and wretched. It was also too scary to go in there.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like some major changes are going to take place to The Galleria area including the conversion of the Macy's on Sage to a Saks Fifth Avenue and the conversion of the old Saks into mall stores. It's hard to say how the renovations will look, but I think the other moves make sense.
ReplyDeleteThis probably won't happen, but perhaps the consolidation of The Galleria Macy's may make re-opening the Northwest Mall Macy's more viable.
I saw this article the other day, it looks like they are going to connect that wing to the mall without Saks Fifth avenue in the way. That small section of the mall has always seemed like an afterthought and does not have the foot traffic that the rest of the mall has.
ReplyDeleteAs of the 16th of March, Macy's Galleria at Sage is discounting and clearing out the whole store
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up. This is a vintage 1980's store and the last of the old Macy's stores in the Houston area still in business. I will have to check it out one more time and get some good images from the store.
Deleteplease document this store before its too late. unfortunately the third floor is almost empty. this is a very nice store and is the last in Houston and maybe in Texas of an original macy's store not the Foley's merger stores
ReplyDeleteI got you covered, I have made two recent trips to this store and I plan on a third before the store is closed.
Deletethanks!
DeleteJACKPOT
ReplyDeletehere is a video Macy's made of deerbrook mall store in 1996 !!!
Can you resend the video link please, I would love to see this video.

DeleteThanks for sending over the link, it was interesting to see how different people looked in 1996. The Macy's in the beginning of this video looks like Baybrook or Willowbrook.
DeleteI use to work at Galleria @ Sage. Yes, it's sad they're closing in about two weeks. Was original Macy's. It is old, Barbara Bush use to shop there!
ReplyDeleteI have a whole lot more to share from this store coming soon. This store has some character unlike modern Macy's stores which are mostly plain.
DeleteAt 4:00 pm , Macy's at Sage has closed. All sales have ended.
ReplyDeleteRIP August 28, 1986 - May 4, 2014
something is going on at the closed location. earlier this week I noticed the door on the west Alabama side of the store had the doors broken into and the store was wide open to the public. anyone know what's going on?
ReplyDeleteIt is going to be demolished to make way for a new development which will more than likely be residential. The new Saks is going to be in the area where the mall stores were located just in front of the Macy's according to the site plan.
DeleteHopefully we can you can post the history of this store
ReplyDeleteHouston has lost a jewel and it looks that soon it's going to be all gone
I have more photos of this store in the final weeks of business coming soon.
Deleteit looks that saks will reuse the walls of the former galleria III and parking garage
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense, the front of the mall is aligned well with the street so it would be a waste if they tore the walls down just to put them up in the same spot. I am guessing that the new store will have 3 floors just like the old one.
Deletethey are saying only 2 floors and if you drive by it shows only 2 floors
Deletehopefully you post the history of Macy's at sage soon
Once I finish off my 2013 photos and backlogged posts I will post the Macy's article. I am going to research the store and get as much information about the grand opening as possible. Thanks for the information.
Deletetry the Houston post archives there is a lot about that store
DeleteDo you know where I can find an online Houston Post link, I could not find any information. I did find a bunch of info on the Chronicle archives including the opening date of the store. The store is being demolished now, I passed by the other night and saw the crews working. The roof is gone and a big part of the wall had been knocked out so you could see the crew working on the third floor. I have one more article I am going to post and then I should have this one ready.
