Plaza De Las Americas Mall Ciudad Juarez Mexico

Plaza De Las Americas Mall in Ciudad Juarez Mexico.

Here is the first of several malls in Juarez Mexico. This mall is located very close to the US/ Mexico border. This mall has overcome many challenges and is reinventing itself for the future. From what little information that is available online, it seems this mall was struggling very badly up until about 5 years ago. The crime wave that struck the city over a decade ago affected this mall more so than others in the city. If I had to guess, I would say this mall was built in the 1980's.

The mall has a variety of stores and entertainment options. Anchors are an S-Mart grocery and a Cinepolis. The mall also features the only ice skating rink in the city and also features a casino. The mall also features a lot of events to draw people in. The mall is made up almost entirely of local businesses and you can find all kinds of interesting items for sale here.
We start in the ice rink/food court area of the mall.

During a school week, there was nobody on the ice rink. From the photos of the mall Facebook page, it gets very crowded here.

This corridor was blocked off at the exit for some reason.

The food court is not very big, but the mall has other food options all throughout.

The mall corridor had these helicopters and planes all across the ceiling. An interesting touch.

The center court of the mall.

This sign reminds me a little of the Sound Warehouse signs from back in the day.

S Mart is a popular grocery store in this part of Mexico. The interior of the store was new and very colorful. I did not get any photos since it was so busy inside and security was guarding both entrances of the store.

This court is in front of one of the S Mart entrances.

Here is the mall directory.

A cool mural painted on one of the vacant store fronts.

A view of the skylight in front of the Subdelegacion Chihuahua a government services office.

A closed off section of the mall that may have led to a junior anchor at one time.

The second entrance to S Mart in the large court.

A few outdoor photos of the mall. Since my method of transportation during this trip was by walking or taxi, there will not be many outdoor photos of the malls visited.

  1. Wow, thanks for the information about this mall. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen any detailed pictures of a Mexican mall before. I don’t know much about Mexican malls so it’s hard to compare it to other similar malls, but the general look of the mall does not look too different from American malls of similar vintage. It’s surprisingly well-maintained for a mall that looks to be struggling somewhat due to the crime in the city.

The musical instruments store at the mall is interesting. There aren’t very many malls like that in the US anymore. Did the mall have any CD/DVD type shops in it? I wonder if those are having any more success there than the similar types of stores are having here in the US.

The presence of an ice rink is interesting. I’m not sure how popular ice skating is in Mexico, but I guess it’s not popular in Houston even though The Galleria has a popular rink and Memorial City has a rink too. I guess it’s a mall design element that a lot of people have copied just like how mall carousels and fountains used to be popular at one time.

It’s interesting that this mall does not have any department store type anchors as far as I can tell. I don’t know if that’s common in Mexico. I also don’t know if it’s common for Mexican malls to have supermarkets, but I bet the one here attracts a lot of shoppers. Who knows how many actually venture into the mall though.

The food court is small. That’s quite different from Canadian malls where the food courts are often bigger than US mall food courts. Also, most Canadian malls have department stores as anchors.

I’m looking forward to seeing more photos of Mexican malls that you may have. I do have some knowledge of Canadian malls as I mentioned above so it’ll be interesting to look at our other neighbors and see what they’re doing as well. It’s always interesting to look at some of the differences and similarities.

    1. This mall did not, but a store named Sounds was in every other mall I visited in the city. I made sure to get some good photos of a few of those stores.
This mall had a few video game stores as well.

The ice rink is probably full on weekends. There is a mall not too far from this one that I documented as well with junior anchors, a department store, and a grocery. In fact every mall in the city except for the most upscale one has a supermarket.

This mall had the smallest food court out of all of the malls I visited there. There is a market just outside of the mall that is like a food court as well.

A lot of the malls in this city are similar to earlier malls in the US. Grocery stores, toy stores, music stores, arcades, junior anchors with outdoor entrances, pharmacies, sit down chain restaurants, department stores with employees dressed up in suits and business attire. It was a very cool experience visiting these places and seeing other things in the city.

This is actually the least popular mall in the city, the rest were much busier and had little to no vacancies inside. I will reply to the other comment you posted soon.
